BABY MASSAGE

Oil massage in infants was first introduced long back around 2nd century BC.The benefits of touch and massage therapy is now very well researched and documented. A review has suggested that massage has several beneficial effects in the form of weight gain, better sleep-wake pattern, more neuro-motor development, emotional bonding, lower rates of nosocomial infection in neonates and preterm babies.

Baby massage offers a wonderful experience and is a special time for the mother to communicate both verbally and non-verbally with the baby. It can also help to reduce crying and emotional distress and offer relief from wind, colic, constipaon and teething discomfort. This also helps the mother to gain a deeper understanding of the baby’s behaviour, crying, body language, besides providing an enjoyable opportunity to spend one-to-one time with the baby and can help to increase confidence in ones ability to care for and nurture a baby.

Although massage is an enjoyable experience for both the baby and the mother, extra care of baby skin is important due to differences in the biological composition between baby and adult skin. The stratum corneum, a principal component of the epidermal barrier, is 30% thinner, and the over- all epidermis is 20% thinner in babies. So it is very important to choose the best oil for baby’s massage.

NATURAL OILS

Sesame oil is often used as a daily massage oil to help improve the body’s overall health and well-being. It’s purifying effects help to cleanse the skin, apply moisture, and prevent the skin from drying. It has high nutrional value since it contains amino acids, vitamin E, and lecithin – all the stuff good for the skin and body.

Sweet Almond Oil is a highly recommended oil for massage. It’s very absorbent and is thin, but it’s still able to maintain its oily properties long after the massage is done. It helps to moisturize and soften the skin.

Rice bran oil contains large amounts of the essential fay acid, Linoleic acid (omega-6), which is shown to soothe inflammation and restore the skin’s barrier funcon.

The main benefit of rice bran oil to the skin is its wonderful deep-moisturizing capability. The oil is also rich in tocopherol and tocotrienol, two forms of the powerful anoxidant Vitamin E. Rice Bran Oil is able to deeply penetrate into skin’s layers, nourishing it from within, making the skin very soft and velvety.

Sunflower oil is rich in unsaturated fay acids, of which 62% is Linoleic acid (Omega 6). It also has a high proportion of sterols and tocopherol (vitamin E). Studies have reported that linoleic acid (LA) and gama-linoleic acid (GLA) reduce transepidermal water loss.

NO HARMFUL OILS

Dermec Massage oil is free from Olive oil and Mineral oils, usually found in many popular massage oils. Olive oil has a large proportion of oleic acid a monounsaturated fay acid. Olive oil may be used to break down scaly skin as in seborrheic dermatitis (cradle cap) of the scalp in a baby, but due to its desquamation properties it should not be applied to most healthy babies as it may break down their fragile skin barriers. Anything that breaks down a baby’s skin barrier may contribute to the development of atopic dermatitis.

Mineral oils coat the skin with an impermeable layer that inhibits the skin’s natural ability to breathe. Although some manufacturers claim that this helps lock moisture in the skin, opponents of mineral oil caution that this film interferes with the skin’s ability to eliminate toxins through sweat. Since mineral oil pulls moisture away from the skin, it can contribute to dry skin and chapping .
