BATHING A NEW BORN

Bath time is a moment of relaxation and mother-child interaction, in addition to being indispensable for the maintenance of skin hygiene and health. Proper skin cleansing helps keep infant skin free of unwanted irritants, including saliva, nasal secretions, urine, feces, fecal enzymes, dirt, and microbial pathogens. Exposure to such factors for long periods, especially in the diaper region, can lead to discomfort, irritation, infection, and skin barrier breakdown. According to the World Health Organizaon (WHO), it is recommended that the newborn be given the first bath 6hours after birth.

BABY SKIN

The skin of newborns has multiple functions for their development: it acts as a protective barrier, helps thermoregulation, exchanges gases, maintains hydration, and contributes to inborn immunity. Additionally, its mildly acidic pH provides addional protection against pathogens. Any disturbance of this natural barrier allows opportunistic microorganisms to spread through the infants’ bloodstream, especially in premature infants due to immunological system immaturity. Studies indicate that the infant’s skin continues to develop for up to 12 months after birth and that it differs from the adult skin in several aspects, such as composition, structure, function, and its suscepbility to infections.

Vs ADULT SKIN

Babies have a very delicate skin (almost ten times thinner than adult skin) and is more prone to dryness and irritaon than adult skin. Ideally, products that are used on infants should not interfere with skin surface pH or disturb the skin barrier. This skin barrier function resides primarily within the stratum corneum (SC), the top layer of the epidermis.
