A cold is caused by one of many different viruses, some of which are airborne, but most are transmitted by hand-to-nose contact. Symptoms of a common cold usually appear one to three days after exposure to a cold-causing virus.

Phenylephrine hydrochloride

Is a decongestant and is in the category of “alpha-adrenergic agonists. These open the nasal passages by shrinking blood vessels in the mucus membrane of the nose, which is the primary cause of the nasal obstruction of colds.

Chlorpheniramine maleate

Is an antihistamine which competitively antagonizes histamine at H1 receptor sites. It is readily absorbed and is 72% protein bound. Reduces cholinergic nerve transmission and also reduces the nasal secretion. Chlorpheniramine maleate is metabolized predominantly in the liver, but also in the lung and kidneys. Caution should be exercised while driving or operating heavy machinery as it may cause drowsiness.
